NeoFolione™ (CAS: 111-79-5), also widely known as Lilial or Butylphenyl Methylpropional (BMHCA), is a synthetic aromatic aldehyde characterized by a strong, fresh floral scent reminiscent of lily-of-the-valley (muguet) and cyclamen. It is a clear to pale yellow liquid at room temperature. For decades, it was a highly valued and frequently used fragrance ingredient in various consumer products due to its pleasing aroma and fixative properties. However, due to recent safety classifications, its use has been heavily restricted or banned in many regions.
Historically, NeoFolione™ was extensively used as a fragrance component in a wide array of consumer products. Its primary use was to impart a fresh, floral, muguet-like scent. Specific uses included:
- Perfumes and colognes
- Cosmetic products such as lotions, creams, shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and deodorants
- Household products like detergents, fabric softeners, cleaning agents, and air fresheners
NeoFolione™ was a staple in the fragrance industry, specifically for:
- **Perfumery:** Employed as a key building block for creating floral accords, particularly lily-of-the-valley, cyclamen, and lilac notes in fine fragrances.
- **Personal Care Products:** Incorporated into formulations to provide a pleasant scent profile in skin care, hair care, and body care items.

NeoFolione™ has been classified by the European Union as a presumed human reproductive toxicant (Repr. 1B) and a skin sensitizer.
- **Reproductive Toxicity:** Classified as H360FD (May damage fertility. May damage the unborn child.) under the EU CLP Regulation. This classification led to its ban in cosmetic products within the EU since March 1, 2022 (EU Regulation 2021/1902).
- **Skin Sensitization:** It is also classified as H317 (May cause an allergic skin reaction) due to its potential to induce contact allergies in sensitive individuals.
Consequently, its use in many consumer products has been either restricted or completely prohibited by regulatory bodies such as the EU and fragrance industry organizations like IFRA (International Fragrance Association).
