Lime Oil Distilled (CAS: 8008-26-2) is an essential oil extracted from the peels of fresh limes, primarily Citrus aurantifolia (Mexican or West Indian lime) or Citrus latifolia (Persian or Tahitian lime), through steam distillation. Unlike cold-pressed lime oil, the distillation process removes most of the furanocoumarins, making it significantly less phototoxic. It typically presents as a pale yellow to light greenish-yellow mobile liquid with a fresh, sweet, citrusy aroma that is often sharper, drier, and less fruity than cold-pressed lime oil, sometimes with a slight aldehydic or turpentine note. Its primary chemical constituents include limonene, alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, gamma-terpinene, sabinene, and terpinolene.
It is widely used as a flavoring agent in the food and beverage industry and as a fragrance component in the perfumery and cosmetics industries.
