Hercolyn D (CAS: 8050-15-5) is a trade name for hydrogenated rosin. It is a pale, brittle, thermoplastic resin produced by the catalytic hydrogenation of natural rosin. This process saturates the double bonds present in the rosin acids, significantly enhancing its oxidative stability, heat resistance, and color retention compared to unmodified rosin. It is soluble in various organic solvents.
Primarily utilized as a tackifier resin in a wide range of adhesive formulations. It also serves as a film-forming agent, binder, or property modifier in coatings, inks, and various other resin-based products.
Adhesives (hot-melt adhesives, pressure-sensitive adhesives, solvent-based adhesives for tapes, labels, construction, and packaging), printing inks (flexographic, gravure), lacquers, varnishes, sealants, sizing agents for paper and cardboard, and as a component in certain wax and polish formulations.
Generally considered to have low acute toxicity. However, like many rosin derivatives, prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause sensitization in susceptible individuals. Inhalation of dust may cause respiratory irritation. Standard industrial hygiene practices, including good ventilation, personal protective equipment (gloves, eye protection, dust mask), and prevention of dust accumulation (to mitigate dust explosion risk), should be followed when handling.
