Calcium dobesilate, commercially known as DUPICAL, is a synthetic vasoprotective agent. It is a calcium salt of 2,5-dihydroxybenzenesulfonic acid. It works primarily by reducing capillary permeability and improving microcirculation and lymphatic flow. It is categorized as an angioprotective agent.
Calcium dobesilate is primarily used in the treatment of various microangiopathies. Key uses include the management of diabetic retinopathy (a complication of diabetes affecting the eyes) and chronic venous insufficiency, which can lead to symptoms like pain, heaviness, edema, and nocturnal cramps in the legs. It is also used for hemorrhoids and some forms of lymphedema.
DUPICAL is used in the pharmaceutical industry as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) for oral medications, typically in tablet or capsule form. It is prescribed in ophthalmology for diabetic retinopathy and in vascular medicine for conditions related to impaired microcirculation and venous insufficiency.
While generally well-tolerated, potential side effects of Calcium dobesilate include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain), skin reactions (rash, itching), and headache. A rare but serious adverse effect is agranulocytosis (a severe reduction in white blood cells), which necessitates immediate medical attention if symptoms like fever, sore throat, or infection signs appear. It should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney insufficiency, and hypersensitivity to the drug is a contraindication.
