Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), also known as Cetone V, is an organic peroxide, typically a colorless, oily liquid, sold as a solution in various solvents (e.g., dimethyl phthalate). It is a highly reactive and hazardous chemical known for its strong oxidizing properties. Chemically, it is a mixture of several peroxide species, primarily dimeric and trimeric cyclic peroxides of methyl ethyl ketone. MEKP is thermally unstable and decomposes to produce free radicals, making it useful as an initiator but also contributing to its hazardous nature.
MEKP is primarily used as a curing agent or hardener for unsaturated polyester resins, vinyl ester resins, and acrylic resins. It initiates the cross-linking polymerization process, transforming liquid resins into solid plastics. This makes it indispensable in composite manufacturing.
Its applications are widespread in industries utilizing fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP) and other resin systems. Key applications include: manufacturing of boat hulls, auto body parts, pipes, tanks, and other structural components; production of artificial marble and cultured onyx; casting and molding applications; adhesives and sealants; and coatings and paints based on polyester or vinyl ester resins.
Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide is a highly hazardous substance. It is corrosive to skin, eyes, and the respiratory tract, causing severe burns and irritation. It is a strong oxidizer and can cause fire or explosion upon contact with incompatible materials (e.g., reducing agents, heavy metals, combustible substances) or exposure to heat, shock, or friction. Decomposition can release flammable and toxic gases. Inhalation of vapors can cause respiratory distress, and ingestion is highly toxic. Proper handling requires extensive personal protective equipment (PPE), excellent ventilation, and strict adherence to storage and handling guidelines to prevent contamination, overheating, and mechanical shock. It must be stored in original containers, away from heat, direct sunlight, ignition sources, and incompatible materials.
