Cajeput Oil (CAS: 8008-98-8) is an essential oil steam-distilled from the fresh leaves and twigs of the Cajeput tree (primarily Melaleuca cajuputi or Melaleuca leucadendra), native to Southeast Asia and Australia. It is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a strong, fresh, camphoraceous, slightly medicinal aroma. Its main chemical component is 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), which accounts for its characteristic scent and many of its therapeutic properties.
Traditionally used in folk medicine for its antiseptic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and decongestant properties. Commonly employed in aromatherapy for respiratory conditions such as colds, coughs, bronchitis, and sore throats. It is also used topically for muscle and joint pain, neuralgia, sprains, and bruises.
Found as an ingredient in various topical liniments, balms, chest rubs, and vaporizing solutions for respiratory relief. It is also used in some cosmetic formulations, soaps, and perfumery for its fresh, clean scent. Due to its insecticidal properties, it has been historically used as an insect repellent.
For external use, Cajeput Oil should generally be diluted to avoid skin irritation or sensitization. Undiluted use can cause irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Ingestion is not recommended and can be toxic, potentially causing nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and central nervous system effects, especially in children. It should be kept out of reach of children and pets. Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is flammable and should be stored away from heat and open flames.
